When you’re planning phonics instruction for your students, it is important to select words they will encounter regularly that are also decodable.
One of the first steps in teaching students to read is working with CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. These words usually contain short vowel sounds and are easily decodable. There are a few exceptions such as car or new.
