The end of the school year is a special time, full of celebration and recognition for all the hard work students have done throughout the year. One way to do this is through the use of end of year awards. In kindergarten and first grade, these awards can play a valuable role in encouraging a growth mindset and a love of learning, as well as providing motivation for students to continue striving for success.
We will also explore how to go about creating and presenting these awards in a way that is both meaningful and exciting for your students!

The Benefits of End of Year Awards
End of year awards are a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of kindergarten and first grade students. Recognizing the hard work and progress of young learners is an important step in building confidence and a love of learning. These awards can provide positive reinforcement of their successes and serve as a reminder of the progress they have made. Awards are a fun and friendly way to show appreciation and build enthusiasm for future learning. They can even help to boost confidence and self-esteem!
End of year awards can also be an effective way to encourage students to continue working hard and striving for success. When students see that their hard work is being recognized and rewarded, they may be more likely to continue putting in the effort needed to achieve their goals. This can be especially important in the early years of education, when students are still developing their sense of self and their understanding of the importance of hard work.
Ideas for End of Year Awards
There are too many options for awards to list in this post – the possibilities are practically endless. But here are some ideas to get you started:
The “Most Improved” award can be given to the student who has shown the most improvement over the course of the school year. This doesn’t have to be purely academic progress either – it could be in terms of behavior or social skills, sports, etc.
The “Best Effort” award could be given to the student who has consistently put forth their best effort, even when faced with challenges or obstacles.
The “Most Creative” award is perfect for your artistically minded students or your innovative thinkers that are creative with their problem solving.
The “Most Responsible” award could be given to the student who has consistently demonstrated responsibility and dependability, such as by turning in assignments on time or being a good role model for their peers.
The “Most Cooperative” award could be given to the student who has consistently worked well with others and demonstrated good teamwork skills.
Of course, your awards don’t have to be the “most” anything. There are lots of creative ideas out there that help recognize your students for all sorts of things like “Super Scientist”, “Future Pop Star”, or “Make Them Laugh”. Essentially, you can turn any positive trait into an award!
Choosing Your End of the Year Awards
There are a few different ways that end of year awards can be chosen and presented in your classroom.
One option is to involve the students in the selection process. For example, students could be asked to nominate their peers for specific awards, or they could be given the opportunity to vote on the recipients of the awards. If you go this route, you must already have an inclusive and positive classroom. You certainly don’t want any students to feel left out because they didn’t receive any votes.
The more common (and honestly simpler approach) is to simply use your knowledge of your students and the observations you’ve made through the year to hand-pick the awards yourself. I’ve found this works best when you have a starting point. Find a set of awards you want to use like the options below and match up your students to the available awards.
Presenting the End of the Year Awards
You’ve got the awards picked out, but how will you present them?
Hosting an “Awards Show” is a fun and creative way to present end of the year awards to students. It’s an exciting way to recognize students for their achievements throughout the year, and it also provides an opportunity for them to feel special and celebrated. To make the awards show more engaging and entertaining, you can set up a stage, have different presenters, and even include a red carpet.
You can also make the awards show interactive by involving the students and asking them to perform a song, a dance, or a skit. This can be a great idea if you’ll be inviting parents to your celebration. Don’t forget to take pictures and videos of the to share with your students and their parents.
Depending on your awards, you may also be able to present your students with a small gift (like a piece of candy or items from the dollar store) that go along with their awards. This is certainly not necessary and you’ll need to budget for those gifts. If that is something you can’t afford to do, your students will remember you recognizing them much longer than a Snickers bar!
Of course, you can always present the awards with a ceremony where each student is simply called up to the front of the class. Again, the special thing about this day is the fact that you are recognizing your students – not the way you are doing it.
The Importance of Inclusivity
It’s also important to ensure that the end of year awards are inclusive and that all students have the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded.
Every student is unique and so are the special things about them. After all, you can only have one student who is the “Fastest Reader”. Consider a variety of awards that recognize different types of achievements, such as academic, artistic, or athletic accomplishments. It’s also important to consider the needs and abilities of all students and to ensure that awards are given to those who may not be as academically or athletically inclined, but who have made other significant contributions to the classroom or school community.
Sometimes the awards that feel the most special, are the ones created to match personalities. Here are some ideas for those awards:
- Friendliest Student
- Chuckle Champion
- Fashionista
- Most Theatrical
End of year awards are a great way to recognize and reward your students for their hard work and dedication throughout the school year. Awards are a perfect way to make sure your students feel appreciated for their efforts and to encourage them to keep up the good work in the coming years. So why not pick out a few end of year awards for your students today and show them how proud you are of their accomplishments?
